To safely and securely detain both pretrial detainees and sentenced inmates.
Opened in 1989, the Pennington County Jail has the capacity to house 276 and 106 in the new
jail annex that was opened in May of 2006. Currently the Pennington County Jail serves Pennington County, Custer County,
Bureau of Prisons, United States Marshals and other counties housing requests.
The Pennington County Jail received accreditation by the
American Correctional Association in 1993. Every three years the jail undergoes a re-accreditation audit. The most recent audit was in 2005. The audit indicated that the jail met 100% of the 76 mandatory standards and 97.5% of the 419 non mandatory standards. There are 3350 jails in the
United States. The Pennington County Jail is one of 105 jails that have achieved accreditation by the ACA.
The Pennington County Jail operates a Work Release Center off site. The Work Release Center was opened in May 2002
and has space for 108 inmates. Inmates who go to Work Release from the jail must serve a minimum of 25% of their
sentence as an in-house jail trustee before being considered for work release. The inmates prior record, current
charges and behavior while in jail are reviewed before the inmate can be approved for work release. The Work
Release Center also takes direct court commitments to work release. Each inmate is charged $18 per day in the
center. Out of county and out of state inmates are charged $50 per day.
