  • PATROL OPERATIONS DIVISION

The Pennington County Sheriff's Office Patrol Operations Division is commanded by Lt. Brian Mueller. The division is made up of one lieutenant, five sergeants and 26 patrol deputies. The primary responsibilities of this division are to provide a timely response to calls for service, to maintain a visible law enforcement presence in Pennington County, as well as to identify community issues and concerns and facilitate community involvement in developing solutions. Our #1 goal is to make Pennington County a safe place to live, raise a family, work, and visit.

Deputy sheriff's working in the Patrol Operations Division also provide vital support to all of the other divisions at the Pennington County Sheriff's Office as well as assistance to other local, state, and federal law enforcement officers. This teamwork approach truly provides a unique and vast network of law enforcement and other community related services for Pennington County residents and visitors.

Pennington County stretches west from Rapid City past Mt. Rushmore to the Wyoming border in the desolate Black Hills and east past Wall, SD and into the wide open beauty of the Badlands. The fact our county spans over 110 miles east to west has made it necessary to split the patrol division into 5 different base operations through out Pennington County. This enables our deputy sheriffs to provide timely professional services to citizens and visitors located anywhere within Pennington County.

    RAPID CITY BASED PATROL OPERATIONS

Four sergeants and 18 deputy sheriffs currently provide law enforcement and other community services out of the Rapid City based patrol operations located in the Public Safety Building at 300 Kansas City St. Supervisors and deputy sheriffs working out of this office cover law enforcement needs in the vast territory east, west, north, and south of Rapid City. Four of these deputy sheriffs are assigned to specific areas or assignments:

Rapid Valley Community Policing Program: Two deputy sheriffs are assigned specifically to the ever growing Rapid Valley community. The Rapid Valley Patrol Office is currently located at 4611 Teak Drive. These deputies work directly with Rapid Valley citizens, schools, and businesses to help identify and solve specific law enforcement related issues in that area. While many other deputy sheriffs and sheriff's office resources support the law enforcement needs in this area, these two deputy sheriffs are a vital resource we keep plugged directly into this community.

Strategic Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP): Two deputy sheriffs are assigned to the newly formed Pennington County Sheriff's Office STEP. The Pennington County Sheriff's Office recently partnered with the South Dakota Office of Highway Safety to fund these two additional deputy sheriffs, their vehicles and much of their equipment. Their primary goal is to reduce the number of fatality and serious injury accidents in Pennington County. One of the number one factors in these types of accidents is drinking and driving. This program will target drinking drivers through the use of specific directed traffic enforcement and will include an office wide and community based educational component to help meet our goals.
