The Sheriff’s Office is tasked by statute with the custody and control of pre-trial defendants, as well as sentenced prisoners. Statute also requires the Sheriff to transport prisoners on writs, as well as to and from evaluations and other court ordered transports. Essentially, the Transport Division moves prisoners from the Pennington County Jail to prison, evaluations, medical appointments, and court.
The Transport Division manages the transportation of an average of 35 prisoners each business day. In actuality, the deputies may well transport over 70 prisoners in a day. These numbers constitute a 24% increase over the last 3 years.
The Sheriff's Office maintains two round trips per week to the South Dakota State Penitentiary. Over 6000 additional persons are transported via these trips each year. Pennington County offers this transport service to other counties and the state to offset costs for transportation.
The Sheriff's Office also operates the security station at the Pennington County Courthouse and oversees the security apparatus there. Along with maintaining a secure perimeter, the Courthouse Security staff responds to calls for service of an emergency nature.
