An emergency committal or a Five-day Hold as it is often called is a document which allows
the facility to hold a client for a period of five days. This excludes weekends and holidays. |
| |
|
A client may be placed on an emergency committal by a medical person such as a doctor from the
hospital, a family member or even the facility. The reasons for an emergency hold vary as they
can be for the client being on medication and have the need to be monitored. It could also be
that the client has had numerous admits and may need to have his drinking or using interrupted
for a few days or it could be that the client just need a safe sober place to be for a few days. |

|
A client may also be placed on an emergency hold if he is being involuntarily committed as it
gives the facility time to get his physical and evaluation done in the time limit mandated by
the state (five days) so that a petition can be filed with the court. |
