Employee of the Month
September, 2008

Liesl Knecht has been a Correctional Officer for the Western SD Juvenile Services Center since January 5, 2004.

Liesl was selected based on this nomination:

Correctional Officer Liesl Knecht's strength is in her eagerness to ensure that the welfare, safety and needs of all detainees are being met.  Most recently there was a detainee that had broken a pair of glasses and they had been broken for several days without being reported. The detainee needed them to be able to function in school. When she found out that the glasses were broken she brought it to the supervisor's attention.  She then routed a medical form to the nurse and wrote an informational report (IR) per JSC policy.

While accomplishing her other duties on mid shift Liesl finds the time to clean and maintain the libraries in minimum, medium and max. Her organizational skills ensure that detainees receive books and magazines in the best possible shape.  She replenishes each library with different books and magazines so that detainees don't get bored with the same old reading material. Additionally she replaces tape on the floors that define the pod stations and marks the tables with numbers for easy identification when detainees eat their meals.

Each year Liesl is recognized by JSC for working one hundred plus hours of overtime. It's her efforts that keep us from using the mandatory overtime list. She is a team player and greatly appreciated by her co-workers.

She enjoys team building and organizes after-work functions that recognize fellow workers who are transferring, retiring or sick. Her contributions maintain a higher level of morale on her shift and her enthusiasm is contagious.

For self improvement she continues with her college classes beyond her bachelor's degree and has completed all extra training courses available to her at JSC.

CO Knecht is a valuable asset to JSC and demonstrates that she cares about the work we do here at WSDJSC. Her willingness and contributions certainly entitle her to be our next Employee of the Month.
